Overview
The Children's Peace Libraries (CPLs) were established in response to Rwanda's post-genocide need for healing, reconciliation, and the promotion of a lasting culture of peace. Recognizing that children play a vital role in shaping the future, the program provides safe, inclusive, and child-friendly spaces where young learners can develop a love for reading while acquiring the values and skills needed to become peaceful and responsible citizens.
Centers for learning, dialogue, and personal growth.
More than just places to access books, the libraries serve as centers for learning, dialogue, and personal growth. Through carefully selected storybooks, interactive read-aloud sessions, guided discussions, creative activities, and digital learning resources, children are encouraged to explore themes such as empathy, respect, cooperation, diversity, forgiveness, and peaceful coexistence.
The program integrates literacy with social-emotional learning and conflict resolution education, helping children strengthen their communication skills, emotional awareness, critical thinking, and ability to resolve disagreements peacefully. By reflecting on stories and sharing their own experiences, children learn to appreciate different perspectives, build healthy relationships, and make positive choices in their daily lives.
The Children's Peace Libraries also work closely with teachers, parents, and local communities to create supportive environments where the values of peace, inclusion, and mutual respect are reinforced both at school and at home. This collaborative approach ensures that learning extends beyond the library and contributes to stronger families and more cohesive communities.
Through the Children's Peace Libraries, the Transformational Leadership Center (TLC) is nurturing a new generation of confident readers, compassionate leaders, and active peacebuilders who are equipped to contribute to a more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient Rwanda.
